SMC PARISH FEAST DAY MASS, PROCESSION & FELLOWSHIP DINNER - 27TH SEPTEMBER 2025

In a fitting tribute to SMC's 135 years of existence, parishioners completed the AOL135 pledge (135 Acts of Love) in time for it to be recorded in a book and presented during the Feast Day mass on 27th September 2025. The target of 135 acts of love was surpassed with the final tally listed as 150. The AOL135 book is presently placed in front of the church altar for all to view. Indeed God smiled down on our little parish that evening, as the skies poured down thundery rain before the mass but stopped completely by the time it came for our historic procession through the streets of Ipoh. Blessed by the earlier downpour, the weather became pleasantly cool for our procession. We were indeed blessed to have Monsignor Jude Miranda (main celebrant), Monsignor Stephen Liew, Fr Francis Andrew, Fr Andrew Wong CDD, Fr Anthony Heng CDD together with our parish priest, Fr Aloysius Tan concelebrate the mass. The Sam Tet School band followed by the Salib bearers led the procession of SMC banners, followed by trucks bearing statues of St Michael and Mother Mary, followed by SMC's team of altar servers, a beautifully decorated float bearing the blessed Sacrament and accompanying priests, with choirs and parishioners making up the rest of the procession. By the intercession of our patron Saint, St Michael the Archangel, may our parish continue to grow in faith, charity and unity. Many thanks to SMC's Organising Team, all volunteers, sponsors and donors, the Penang Diocese's Multimedia team and the authorities for making our 135th anniversary celebrations truly memorable and joyous.
The entire Feast Day mass and procession may be viewed in the Diocese of Penang's YouTube channel.

PARISH RECOLLECTION DAY - 24TH AUGUST 2025
In preparation for our parish's 135th anniversary, Fr Aloysius Tan conducted a parish recollection retreat for SMC parishioners. The theme was "Parish Recollection Day : "Discipleship beyond 135..." The event began with an opening address and prayer by SMC's Faith Formation Chairman, Ramond Chin followed by the singing of a Praise and Worship hymn.
Fr Aloysius began with a little anecdote on how he tried to draw inspiration for this recollection, from the founding MEP priests of SMC, by visiting and praying at their graves.
Our parish has the great honour of being the first Catholic church built in Ipoh and the MEP Fathers were instrumental in this mission. They also possessed great foresight in the selection of suitable
sites to build churches, which often progressed later on to become very valuable pieces of real estate. Indeed, Fr Aloysius noted that SMC has seen an increasing stream of
foreign visitors to Ipoh, due to its prime location in the city.
Fr Aloysius then emphasized that a church is not defined merely by its building structure, but rather the people and how its legacy or mission is passed on. He compared a church that was overly comfortable and satisfied with themselves despite having no growth in new converts and outreach missions to one that was essentially preparing for its own death. Remaining stangnant is spiritually unhealthy and this recollection day invites us to be inspired by our past, reflect on how we are walking in the present as disciples of Christ, to look towards the future. At the heart of our faith is discipleship.
Fr Aloysius looked at 3 important elements of discipleship. Firstly, the call to discipleship, which is God's great commission to every baptised Christian. Each person is called to serve and evangelize in his or her own capacity and abilities. We are also reminded that discipleship is for the parish to the glory of God. A short group exercise among participants revealed words like "Family", "Home", "Love", "Welcoming", "Inclusive" and "Safe" that were used to describe what they felt about being part of SMC. Fr Aloysius emphasised that each person no matter their age or qualifications, has a part to play in discipleship and mission. He told the story of an elderly lady whom he knew in another parish, and how despite her age, always walked throughout that church distributing the church bulletin to all parishioners in their pews. It is also thanks to the strong foundation of faith that SMC has grown and achieved much, which takes us to the second element of discipleship, growth. The 135 Acts of Love mooted in celebration of our parish's 135th anniversary has far exceeded its target of 135, much to Fr Aloysius's delight. This shows that our parish understands their role as disciples of Christ, that our duty is not just to worship liturgically but also to go out and proclaim the Good News by our actions. We need to be living testimonies of our faith wherever we are.
The third element involves looking forward to the future. Fr Aloysius envisions a church far larger than what we have now that would require far bigger halls and buildings to house all worship and mission activities. As missionary disciples of Christ, we are all also called to look beyond ourselves and pass on the mission to the next generation. Fr Aloysius then recounted his experience in South Korea where the evangelization spirit is so strong and they actively organise many social evangelization events which attracted droves of young people to the church. We all need to be evangelizers as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28: 19-20. We need to constantly ask ourselves whether we are a Maintenance Church or a Missionary Church. A shift from Maintenance to Missionary church requires a shift in our lifestyle, mindset and some discomfort too.
Fr then asked participants to break into smaller groups for another exercise. All participants were asked to discuss and report on how they could contribute to the parish's mission of evangelization. Sharing about our faith with non-Christians in any casual setting, like a park or hospital, and physically or financially supporting people in their time of need are some of the indirect ways of evangelization which some participants have done. Engaging in discussions on our faith in a friendly space like over a meal or drinks, while allowing others to ask about our experiences was another suggestion put forward by a participant. Some suggested that more should offer their time and services to the many ministries available in the parish.
PPC Chairperson Jennifer Duarte was then asked to share something by Fr Aloysius towards the end of the session. She mentioned that the parish is always in need of more people to serve. She invited parishioners with writing abilities to contribute their talents in writing to report on church activities and events for the parish FB and for Herald publications. The parish religious articles centre is also in need of more assistance as the present couples helping to man the centre have been serving for a very long time. The session ended with a prayer by Fr Aloysius and a fellowship dinner.

SYBIL KATHIGASU LEGACY - BOOK LAUNCH ON 29TH JULY 2025
SMC was the host of two book launches on the afternoon of 29th July 2025. Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang was on hand to launch the books "Kenangan Luka" by Mr Fahmi Mustaffa, the Bahasa Malaysia translation of Sybil Kathigasu's "No Dram of Mercy" and Mr AS Francis' "Fingers of Faith That Touched the Heavens", a Tamil book that talked about faith which drove Sybil Kathigasu's actions during WWII. Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang, in his opening address, talked at length about Sybil Kathigasu's legacy and her memoir "No Dram of Mercy". Cardinal Sebastian went on to highlight the various book translations of Sybil's memoir. At present, there is a Malay, Chinese and even a Japanese translation of the book. The Tamil narrative on Sybil's suffering and faith is found in "Fingers of Faith that Touched the Heavens". The French translation though completed, has yet to be published. His Eminence also touched on the sacrifices of Catholic missionaries, in particular 9 priests of German descent and 3 locals, who lost their lives in Sabah - North Borneo, during the 2nd world war, around the same time that Sybil was fighting for her patients and her own life. He also briefed the audience about the Penang diocese's plan to pursue the cause of beatification and canonisation for Sybil. A letter from Archbishop Julian Leow of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, espousing his support to this cause was shown to the audience.
The book-launching ceremony by the two authors, Mr Fahmi Mustaffa and Mr AS Francis together with Cardinal Sebastian, began thereafter. This was then followed by the panel discusion. To facilitate the panel discussion about the different aspects of the books on Sybil Kathigasu were Mr Fahmi Mustaffa, Mr AS Francis, Dr Jean Charles Khalifa and Professor Elsa LaFaye, who served as moderator. Mr AS Francis's book delves into the faith of Sybil, which kept her going. Mr Fahmi also honed in on the faith that powered Sybil. Dr Khalifa noted that his translation in French and the one by Mr Fahmi in Malay was quite similar in that the opening lines emphasised more the era i.e. date, rather than on Sybil's narrative about herself and her family. After the panel discussions, Mr Michel Chambon, a Catholic French theologian and cultural anthropologist gave an address on the influence and effects of the Catholic faith particularly the French foreign missionaries in Malaya. Perak Heritage Society founding member and past president, Mr Law Siak Hong gave his address at the close of the event. He was instumental in collating the pieces of Mdm Kathigasu's heroic life story and obtaining some personal articles used by Sybil from her daughter. He was also personally responsible for the current preservation of the clinic from which Sybil and her husband, Dr Abdon Clement Kathigasu, operated from in Papan. The personal effects of Sybil was on display during this book launch, courtesy of the Perak Heritage Society. Among the many clergy and religious in attendance were Fr Joe Stephen C.Ss.r, Fr Michael Dass, Fr Edwin, Fr Edmund Woon, Deacon Paul Kang, Sister Dorothy Khaw and Fr Eugene Benedict, who has been tasked with the documentation and archiving of records pertaining to the cause for Sybil Kathigasu's beatification and canonisation.
Emcee Mr Christopher Kushi then invited all attendees to visit and pray at the grave of Sybil Kathigasu, located in the graveyard of St Michael's church. The event ended with tea and fellowship.

"HOLY SPIRIT IN THE BIBLE - PART 2" - 6TH JUNE 2025
Fr Simon Anand started Day 2 of his talk on the "Holy Spirit in the Bible" with a comprehensive look at the role of the Holy Spirit in the creation of man, taken from the Book of Genesis to the salvific work of Jesus Christ, in the Gospel of John. He also spoke about the preternatural gifts of Original Peace bestowed upon man implied in the Book of Genesis, namely Immortality, Infused knowledge, Immunity from pain and Integrity which were lost by the commission of the original sin. The coming of Jesus repeals the sin of Adam and Eve. He highlighted how in the Gospel of John after the resurrection, the imagery of Jesus breathing upon the Apostles and giving them new life in the Holy Spirit mirrors the creation of man by God in the Book of Genesis.
Fr Simon further explained the significance of the Ascension and the teachings that all will receive from the Holy Spirit. The Ascension brings the physical resurrected body of Christ to beyond the limits of this natural world and beyond the constraints of time and space. This allows believers to partake in the same one true body of Christ in the Eucharist in masses at different places in the entire world. The Ascension is necessary to complete the redemption of man (human beings) by Jesus Christ and it is only after man has been redeemed that he can receive the Holy Spirit, who will lead all man to God. When the Holy Spirit comes, he will convince all men of sin, righteousness and judgement. The descent of the Holy Spirit i.e. Pentecost is in effect the birth of the Missionary Church, when all believers are empowered by the Holy Spirit to go out and proclaim the Good News of the salvation of Jesus Christ. Fr Simon concluded with an explanation about what constitutes an unforgivable sin against the Holy Spirit. He invited participants to read the encyclical by the late Pope John Paul II entitled Divinum Et Vivificantem. To summarise, the sin against the Holy Spirit is a deliberate refusal to believe in God and His Salvation working through the Holy Spirit, despite having the capacity to believe. The session ended with a prayer led by Fr Simon. On behalf of all participants, PPC Chairperson Ms Jennifer Duarte thanked Fr Simon for the wealth of knowledge and insights shared by him over the past two days.
"HOLY SPIRIT IN THE BIBLE" - 5TH JUNE 2025
SMC welcomed Fr Simon Anand, parish priest of the Sacred Heart church, Kampar for Day 4 of our SMC series of talks leading up to Pentecost. This session was the first of a two-parter entitled "Holy Spirit in the Bible". Fr Simon shared how the Church fathers after years of much study, prayer and deliberations only formally affirmed the Holy Spirit in the Third person of the Trinity in 381 AD during the Council of Constantinople. The lines from the Nicene-Constantinople Creed proclaiming our belief in the Holy Spirit served as a basis for the 4 articles of discussion, that is : 1) The Lord, the Giver of Life ; 2) Who proceeds from the Father and the Son ; 3) Who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified ; 4) Who has spoken through the prophets.
For each article of discussion, Fr Simon referenced the relevant books from the Old Testament (namely Genesis, Exodus and Jeremiah) to the Gospel of Luke and John in the New Testament which demonstrated the power of the Holy Spirit in his role as giver of life and one who manifests God's presence. In the time of Moses, whenever the Holy Spirit overshadowed the Ark of the Covenant, God became present among the people. Similarly, when the Holy Spirit foreshadowed the Virgin Mary, Christ came into being in her womb. The Holy Spirit is often referred to as the "Ruah" of God, meaning the breath of God in Hebrew. Fr Simon used an interesting analogy for the Triune God with the Father being the mind, the Son being the intention and the breath being the Holy Spirit. In a perfect being the mind, breath and intention must all work in sync. In essence, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all equal. He explained that in the bible, water touched, given or offered by Jesus symbolically refers to the Holy Spirit. Fr Simon also shared fascinating insights for the context of Jesus' proclamations. For example, in John 7 : 37, on the last day of the Feast of Dedication, Jesus offered living water to all who believe. Historically, Jews were prohibited from asking or offering anyone water on the last day of the feast as the last day was when all were to rely fully on the providence of God. In essence, Jesus was offering the Holy Spirit and revealing his identity as God when he offered the living water in John 7 : 37. Fr Simon also gave a very interesting explanation about the meaning of the word "Paraclete" which Jesus used to describe the Holy Spirit whom He sent to help us. "Para" means to "be along" and "clete" derived from the Greek word "kletos" means "to be called". In an ancient Roman court of law, the paraclete would serve as an interpreter or advocate for the accused.
Ultimately the mission of the Holy Spirit is to convince all people in the world of the salvation of Christ through His Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension. Participants were indeed blessed to have gained much insights, historical context and knowledge from this session by Fr Simon and look forward to more insights the following evening.
"THE HOLY SPIRIT & ITS CHARISMS" - 4TH JUNE 2025
SMC was blessed to have Permanent Deacon Charles Lazaroo, Head of the Penang Diocesan Healing and Deliverance Ministry, deliver a talk on the charisms of the Holy Spirit. For the uninitiated, charism refers to supernatural graces or spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit to individuals for the common good of the Church. They are meant to empower Christians to serve and build up the church (cf. CCC 799 - 800). There are 9 charisms of the Holy Spirit. Deacon Charles began the session with an ice-breaker exercise asking participants to organise themselves into smaller groups of 5 or 6 persons. Each participant was asked to introduce themselves within the group and state what gift/skill he or she possessed. Deacon Charles then presented on one of the most commonly talked about charism of the Holy Spirit, the gift of tongues. Some people are gifted with the ability to speak in tongues, i.e. talking in a language of men or angels which they themselves would ordinarily not understand. As stated in 1 Cor 12:4, there are many gifts of the Holy Spirit. Deacon Charles emphasized however, that St Paul warned that the gift of tongues should only be shared if it could be interpreted to listeners who do not understand what they are hearing, otherwise it would be meaningless. He then talked about how we as Christians should be bold in asking Jesus for the Holy Spirit in order to experience true conversion and spiritual growth. We also need to forgive and let go of past hurts or bad experiences in order to fully receive the Holy Spirit's charisms. Deacon Charles shared some interesting personal recollections on how he had experienced the gifts of the Holy Spirit in his life. He strongly encouraged all attendees to participate in the "Life in the Spirit" seminars to enrich their spiritual growth. We thank Deacon Charles for coming out to Ipoh from Taiping, to educate us more about the charisms of the Holy Spirit.

"HOLY SPIRIT & THE CHURCH" - 31ST MAY 2025
The second talk in our series of talks leading up to Pentecost was helmed by our parish priest Fr Aloysius Tan. Fr Aloysius focused on the fact that it is Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit who makes his Church one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic church. Christ gave us the Holy Spirit on Pentecost to help us to be holy disciples filled with courage to go outside of ourselves to spread the gospel and to do good. Fr Aloysius then drew on his many interesting life experiences to share about how the Holy Spirit touches us all. He warned about the dangers of spiritual pride, thinking we know better than even the magisterium of the church, developing an extremely self-focused and inward-looking parish or having an "exclusive" mentality. These are all major obstacles to true spiritual growth. We thank Fr Aloysius for his interesting observations and insights.
"COME HOLY SPIRIT! COME WITH YOUR FIRE!" - 30TH MAY 2025

In preparation for Pentecost, our parish of St Michael's has organised a series of evening sessions on the Holy Spirit in both English and Mandarin. The first session in English was kicked off by Martin Jalleh, who started by asking whether we as Catholics truly understood what we are invoking when we sing the hymn "Come Holy Spirit! Come with your Fire!", which formed the theme for his truly "spirited" session. He walked us through the manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the bible from the time of Moses in the burning bush encounter to the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan river. He went into the significance of fire as a symbol and manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Fire can purify, punish and protect as it has been shown throughout biblical history. Pentecost in short, is not limited to the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles centuries ago, nor is it merely an annual liturgical celebration in our Catholic church. Pentecost is our daily encounter with the Holy Spirit daily which transforms our thoughts, our actions and our way of living to be more aligned with our God. As always, Mr Jalleh presented a lively and engaging talk occassionally shooting questions to the floor. We thank Martin Jalleh for his precious nuggets of wisdom on the Holy Spirit.

SMC parish priest Fr Aloysius Tan then called upon SMC parishioners to pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis in the same evening of that day. Pope Francis was a man who truly embodied Christ in his life and his habits and was greatly admired by many, not only within the Catholic church. A book for parishioners to write their tributes was opened and placed in church before the prayers. This book will later be sent to the Apostolic Nuncio in Kuala Lumpur. Despite the short notice, many parishioners made their way to church in the evening to pay their respects and pray a rosary for the Holy Father. Prayers for the deceased will be held subsequently at every weekday mass culminating in a Memorial mass on Saturday (26/4/2025) at 12.00 noon. The Divine Mercy chaplet will then be prayed at 3.00 p.m. followed by the livestream (in church) of the funeral mass from Vatican City starting at 4.00p.m. The day will end with the sunset mass for Divine Mercy Sunday at 6.00p.m.
EASTER JOY CELEBRATIONS & FAREWELL TO BRO DANIEL ABELA - 20TH APRIL 2025
The celebration of Easter continued into the evening of Easter Sunday with Solemn Vespers led by parish priest Fr Aloysius and Bro Daniel.
The large congregation then departed to the PAC hall where the newly baptized were warmly welcomed by all present and baptism / confirmation certificates presented
to them at the same time. Fr Aloysius also paid tribute to the youth who participated in the Grow to Glow programme for SPM leavers and presented them with their certificates as well.
Lastly, Fr Aloysius paid tribute to Bro Daniel Abela, who will be leaving SMC in a few days time. Bro Daniel has been a true blessing to our parish in the 3 months that he's been here and
his presence will be greatly missed. He has endeared himself to the youth and parishioners, actively immersing himself in the liturgical and outreach activities of our parish. He even conducted a service partially in Mandarin
during the time Fr Aloysius was on away on clergy retreat. Bro Daniel gave a short speech thanking all the people for their support and in particular, Fr Aloysius who had been a great help in opening up opportunities
for him in his priestly studies. A book signed by parishioners containing their well-wishes and ang pow were then presented to Bro Daniel by Fr. After a short prayer by Fr, all were then invited to partake in the feast organised by the church, with some food contributions by parishioners as well.

LENT RECOLLECTION - 28TH & 29TH MARCH 2025
DAY 1 (28/3/2025)
Fr Gerard Theraviam, parish priest of the Cathedral of St John, Kuala Lumpur, shared some helpful insights on what it means to go on a pilgrimage for the first of SMC's Lent Recollection. It means to journey together and in the Jubilee motto: Pilgrims of Hope, it brings to mind the long journey of the Israelites in their exodus from Egypt for their deliverance from slavery to freedom led by God. Similarly, in our modern day analogy of migrants and refugees fleeing situations of misery and violence in search of a better life, calls to mind that we too, are in fact pilgrims in this life. This realization is the first call for conversion – to reflect on what God is asking of us in our journey to the house of the Father and to have a good examination of conscience as earthly pilgrims. Journeying together also means a second call to conversion – a summons to synodality – as the Holy Spirit impels us not to remain self-absorbed as we keep walking towards God and our brothers and sisters. It means consolidating the unity grounded in our common dignity as children of God, without leaving anyone behind or excluding anyone. The third call to conversion is a call to hope, to trust in God and his great promise of eternal life. The central message of the Jubilee that hope does not disappoint is the focus of our Lenten Journey towards the victory of Easter, in which our faith and hope rest in the resurrection of Christ, a victory over sin and death.
DAY 2 (29/3/2025)
The second session focused on the last 7 spoken words of Jesus before his death on the cross with references to many bible verses which provides divine wisdom on the subjects of his spoken words :
i. "Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing" - Jesus showed us that forgiveness was necessary in order for us to repair our relationship with God and one another. True forgiveness also sets us free from anxieties, worries and other useless bondages ;
ii. "Today you will be with me in paradise" - The words spoken to the so-called "good thief" shows God's endless mercy towards his children ;
iii."Woman behold your son" and to his disciple, "Behold your mother" - Jesus' gift of Mother Mary to us ;
iv. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me" - Jesus while he was on earth faced the same challenges and sufferings as we did and many of us can relate to these feelings of helplessness and loss of faith. Fr Gerard expounded further by going deeper into "the Dark night of the Senses" and "the Dark night of the Soul." Many who are overwhelmed by such feelings make the mistake of giving up, abandoning the faith or becoming mere "Sunday Catholics". Indeed such feelings are normal and merely part of our process of growing in the faith. The only right response when such feelings threaten to overwhelm us is to persevere and preferably immerse into even more prayers and good works. It is only by perseverance through trials that our characters can be built and hope is kindled in our hearts ;
v. "I thirst" - This can represent our own desire for God or even for things that are not good for us. How we choose will determine the consequences which we have to face;
vi. "It is finished" - Jesus announced these words as his mission on earth to die for the sins of all men was accomplished. How many of us will be able to proclaim the same at our time of death? Lent is a time for us to reflect on the unfinished business or unaccomplished missions in our own lives, broken relationships that need to be reconciled, wrongs that must be made right etc;
vii. "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" - Jesus surrendered fully to God the Father at the end of his mission. How many of us truly trust God fully and allow him to be the primary "driver" in our lives?
Fr Gerard ended the final day's session by teaching participants how to meditate, with a short exercise by using the word "Maranatha" (an Aramaic word meaning "Come Lord") as our mind's focal point. The wisdom and stories shared by Fr Gerard throughout the two days were truly enriching and insightful for SMC's Lenten Reollection.
CARITAS MISSION TALK - 22ND MARCH 2025

Caritas Malaysia was initiated at the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei (CBCMSB) in January 2020. Since then every priest in Malaysia had been directed by their respective Bishop / Archbishop to form a Caritas ministry within their parishes. To date 29 parishes in the diocese have initiated parish-level Caritas groups. SMC is one of the few who have yet to establish one. Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of 162 national Catholic relief, development and social services organisations spanning the globe. It started as individual Catholic relief organisations founded on Catholic social teachings, the first of which was founded in 1897 in Germany.
Fr Fabian Dicom, who was appointed as National director of Caritas Malaysia on 15th May 2023, explained the formation of Caritas Malaysia to attendees which comprised members of the Perak Deanery Sahabat Orang Asli group, Ministry for the Poor and SMC PHDC, among others. To clear up misconceptions about the function and role of Caritas in each parish, Fr Fabian began by explaining the motivation for the work of Caritas, the origins of Caritas and the establishment of Caritas Malaysia by the CBCMSB to be the overarching body of the Catholic Church's human development and charity work.
Fr Fabian reiterated that Jesus Christ must always be the model of our Christian mission. As John 14:6 tells us, Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Upon our baptism we assume the mission of Christ to be priest, prophet and servant. He drew on Luke 4:16-18, which states clearly the mission of Jesus and our mission as Christians. We are called to proclaim the good news to the poor and set prisoners free, to welcome outcasts and transform societies. We are called to uphold human dignity, promote social justice and defend the weak and the oppressed. As Pope Francis reminds us all, the Church must be a field hospital which stands ready to tend to those in need not a mere institution concerned with pomp and rituals. We are all interconnected and hence we also have a duty to care for God's creation and the world we live in.
Caritas also aims to go beyond mere charity work, but to promote justice and undertake advocacy work. Caritas tries to address the root cause of poverty and suffering instead of just providing short-term assistance. The old adage "it is better to teach a man to fish, than to just give him a fish" sums up what Caritas is aiming to achieve. Fr Fabian recalled the time the Lighhouse project in Penang was established by the diocese via the Penang Office for Human Development. Many "good Catholics" were opposed to it saying that some of the people who went to get free meals at the Lighthouse looked too well-dressed to be homeless or poor! Attempts to secure simple odd jobs for these homeless were also not taken up by a single Catholic household when word was put out! In the end, the POHD established "Lightworks" which allowed some of the homeless to clean-up the graves at the Catholic cemetary for a fee. As Christians, we need to learn to see through the eyes of Christ and not judge the people we are purportedly trying to help!
Fr Fabian highlighted some of the work done by Caritas Malaysia to date. These include flood relief work (in Miri and Penang) and the rescue of women who were trafficked into Malaysia. Caritas Malaysia has initiated a Disaster Relief Fund since its inception. It is also presently focused on capacity building. This involves training Caritas staff and volunteers for relief work.
For Fabian gave some useful proposals for how Caritas could be established in SMC. One proposal is the establishment of a new Caritas ministry working closely with the Parish Priest to coordinate all parish-based social initiatives and liase with the diocesan Caritas office. Another option is to have Caritas function as an umbrella organisation which oversees the work of existing social outreach parish groups. Parish priest, Fr Aloysius Tan who joined the talk at a later juncture, also proposed to establish a Creation Justice ministry in SMC. It was proposed that all SMC ministries working for social justice and human development come together to set the groundwork for establishing Caritas in SMC.
Fr Fabian took questions from the floor throughout the evening. The session ended with a prayer by Fr Fabian.

SMC'S PARISH ASSEMBLY - 16TH FEBRUARY 2025
SMC's annual parish assembly which had been postponed last year due to the changeover of priests, was held this year on Sunday, 16th Feb 2025. The turnout was impressive, with the PAC hall utilised to its full capacity. The assembly opened with a praise and worship session by the SMC Youth group, followed by enthronement of the Word of God and scripture reading in English and Mandarin. PPC Chairman Ms Jennifer Duarte then opened the assembly with a short welcome address. Parish priest, Fr Aloysius Tan introduced an unexpected guest in the form of Monsignor Jude Miranda. Msgr Jude explained the spiritual direction of the diocese in line with the synodal mission conceptualised by Pope Francis. Participants were asked to see their journey of faith analogous to the Tent of Meeting in the Old Testament. The parish should strive to be like a Tent of Meeting where everyone could meet God, discern the will of God, offer hospitality to friends and strangers and journey together as one community of faith. Similarly, the parish assembly hopes to come up with concrete ways in which our parish of St Michael could be transformed by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to become a church where every person has an active role and for all to become true living reflections of God's presence.
Fr Aloysius identified two main concerns in SMC and two questions were posed to all attendees namely :
(1) How can we make our church more meaningful as we journey together as a community? ;
(2) Keeping the spirit of Synodality, how can our society be more united despite the differences and challenges we go through in life?
Participants were then broken up into smaller groups of not more than 8 persons to discuss the questions posed and come up with suggestions to address the issues. Every member of the group was given the opportunity to speak for 2 minutes on the topic of discussion. After all members had spoken, members were to speak another 2 minutes on the subject after having heard and contemplated on what other members had said. Each elected group facilitator were then asked to put forward their observations and suggestions to the entire assembly. Some suggestions that were put forward include setting up support for parents with children with special-needs and individuals who need counselling, changing ourselves to be more inclusive and friendly, restarting the soup kitchen to reach out to the poor and encouraging more inter-cultural activities to foster better relations between the different races.
At the end of the sessions, Fr Aloysius made some significant announcements pertaining to our parish, namely the formation of Caritas (the social mission arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malaysia) in SMC by May 2025 and the consecration of families to the Sacred Heart of Jesus during this year, among others. In conjunction with the parish's 135th anniversary, he also launched the AOL 135 initiative in which all of SMC's parish ministries, BECs and parishioners not belonging to any group, will collectively undertake up to 135 "Acts of Love" (Works of mercy/charity) in the year 2025. The collective Acts of Love will be offered up as a thanksgiving to God to mark our 135 years of founding. He also expressed hope that after building upon our synodal plans, the parishioners will be better equipped for outreach missions for Christ by the year 2027.

JUBILEE YEAR OF HOPE FORMATION - 17TH & 18TH JANUARY 2025
17/1/2025 Day 1 : Journeying Together As An Inspiring Synodal Church
In conjuction with Jubilee Year 2025, Fr Aloysius Tan invited Rev Fr Dr Clarence Devadass, director of the Catholic Research Centre from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur to conduct two formation sessions. Fr Clarence gave insightful explanations about the conception of the Synod on Synodality by Pope Francis. In between the topics of discussion, Fr Clarence also shared humorous observations of Catholic behaviour and uplifting encounters with prisoners on death row. The numerous problems and conflicts in the world have caused many to lose hope. The Catholic church is in serious need of revival if she is to be a beacon of hope for the faithful and the lost. To be an inspiring synodal church, we baptized Catholics, need to reclaim and reaffirm our identity as God’s children. As a church, we must be open to dialogue, listening and facilitating meaningful programmes to welcome people from all walks of life and those who have fallen away. We need to overhaul our mindsets to focus on the big picture and not on our own inconveniences or petty issues e.g. lack of car-parking spaces, air-conditioners etc. In short, the church must return its focus to the mission that Christ gave and all Catholics need to reclaim the joy of knowing God, to be an inspiring synodal church.
18/1/2025 Day 2 : Celebrating The Jubilee year : Reawakening Hope Through Christian Living
Fr Clarence explained the biblical Jewish origins of the Jubilee year. He also explained the significance of the Holy Doors and how indulgences are effected in the Catholic Church. He outlined the conditions for obtaining the jubilee indulgence and noted that the Jubilee year is more than mere rituals and pilgrimages. It is an opportunity for reconciliation and reaffirming our faith through meaningful acts and observations. Fr Clarence stressed that our lives must be upheld by these four pillars : Truth, Forgiveness, Freedom and Justice. To be effective ambassadors of Christ’s hope, we as Christians must cultivate the following 8 characteristics: i) Faith-filled ; ii) Compassionate ; iii) Joyful ; iv) Generous ; v) Courageous ; vi) Prayerful ; vii) Humble ; viii) Servant-hearted. He then shared with the participants how each parish and individual could contribute to reawakening Christ’s hope through its various ministries and initiatives within the parish. The Jubilee year affords all Catholics the opportunity to reconcile with God and with others. It is a time to reawaken hope and to reaffirm our commitment to Jesus and to renounce our old way of life. The final session ended with a closing prayer by both Fr Clarence and Fr Aloysius. We thank Fr Clarence Devadass for spending time with us over these 2 days to teach and enlighten us. We also thank our parish priest Fr Aloysius Tan and all SMC team members (i.e. the Faith Formation team, Sound Team and SMC English Youth Group) who helped to make these 2 formation sessions enlightening and enjoyable.
