TALK BY FR JERRY ORBOS - 19TH DECEMBER 2023
We at the parish of St Michael, Ipoh had the priveledge of hosting much loved Filipino priest, Fr Jerry Orbos SVD (Missionary to SVD-PH Central Province/ SVD Mission – Superior Delegatus and Vocation Promoter). Besides celebrating mass in our parish on Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent, we also received much words of wisdom from Fr Jerry on the topic of obtaining peace in our hearts. Fr Jerry in his inimitable style, peppered his talk with jokes, personal stories, songs and even a spot of "magic"!
Some nuggets from Fr Jerry:
1. To have peace in our heart, we must have faith. To have faith, we must cultivate a prayer life. We need to start and end our day in prayer and be mindful of God throughout the day in all that we do. One suggested practice is to kneel down first thing in the morning to start our morning prayer with a humble thanksgiving to God. We need to capture our feelings for the moment and the remember the reasons why we do the things we do. A simple prayer for us to remember at all times : Jesus I trust in you. Mama Mary, I love you.
2. We must have the humility to confess our sins and ask for forgiveness from God to achieve peace in our hearts. We need to forgive all those who have hurt us and ask for forgiveness from those we may have hurt in our thoughts, words and deeds. God loves us even when we are sinners but we must resolve to stop hurting people with our words and actions. Remember and say these three phrases more often - "Thank you, I'm sorry, I love you"
3. It is more important to be kind, not to be right all the time. Do not be judgemental and we must be kind in our speech as well as our deeds. Do not play the game of ICE = Imposition, Control, Expectations.
4. Try not to take ourselves too seriously. None of us are getting out of this alive while we are on earth. Those who place a lot of importance on what they think they have achieved in terms of power, material wealth, status will rarely have peace of mind. Remember that everything we have comes from God and all our so-called wealth, beauty and health can be gone in an instant. Those who acknowledge God as the source of all their possessions will be able to weather life's turbulent storms with a peace in their heart that only God can give.

CONCLUSION OF BIBLE STUDY ON WISDOM - 22ND JULY 2023
The 8-session bible study (entitled Wisdom : God's Vision for Life) facilitated by SMC's Faith Formation team, ended on 22nd July 2023. Participants enjoyed fellowship over a generous breakfast spread before the start of the final session. The pot bless meals which each participant brought were indeed more than sufficient with leftovers to spare. After the usual video session and group sharings, each group representative gave their testimony on how this bible study had impacted them. Participants revealed that it was indeed a richly rewarding experience as some were previously not even familiar with the wise teachings found in the bible through the books of Wisdom, Sirach and Proverbs. Participants shared that the group-sharing sessions was particularly rewarding as it helped members get different perspectives on many issues and it also fostered good camaderie among group members. One young participant shared that session 2 on decision-making, was indeed a timely aid to help her decide on her future study plans after finishing her SPM examination. In our journey of faith, may the wisdom of Jesus Christ and the Catholic church revealed to us through the scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic church, continue to grow in us and guide us in our daily living so that we may live our lives according to God's plan for us.

BIBLE STUDY ON WISDOM : GOD'S VISION FOR LIFE (SESSION 1) - 3RD JUNE 2023
The 8-session bible study entitled Wisdom: God's Vision for Life officially started on the morning of June 3rd, 2023 with a total of 57 participants.
This bible study programme organised by SMC's Faith Formation team aims to help participants equip themselves with the Wisdom of God
found in scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic church. Areas which will be covered throughout the 8 weeks include application of wisdom in areas
of decision-making to finances and relationships, among others. Participants will be given notes and homework for each successive week on the week before the sessions and these
will be used in the respective group-sharing sessions after the video screenings.
The first session started with a welcome address by Fr Anthony Liew and thereafter an introduction to the entire programme by chief facilitator Catherine Chong. The first video session introduces participants to the concept of wisdom and the difference between Godly wisdom and worldly wisdom, and the relationship between knowledge, wisdom and understanding. In summary, wisdom is defined as the right application of knowledge, the ability to make good decisions and the skill of living life from God's perspective. The foundation for true wisdom is none other than our Lord Jesus Christ. We hope that all participants will truly be enriched with God's wisdom by the end of this bible study programme.

SMC LEADERSHIP FORMATION - 21ST MAY 2023
Approximately 70 leaders and members from the BECs and parish ministries of the English-Speaking Apostolate of SMC participated in a lively and engaging leadership formation session entitled "Embracing Servant-Leadership" conducted by Mr Vernon Christopher Fernandez. Vernon is a professional trainer with decades of experience in the hospitality industry and training for employees and volunteers in the corporate and non-corporate arena and is no stranger to SMC as he was also one of the presenters during the Sharing Christ programme held in SMC, back in 2019.
The formation was a talk by Vernon interspersed with group exercises which captured the participants' attention throughout the entire 3 hours. The group exercises showed participants that everyone had their different strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes but that everyone in a team whether in church ministry, at work or as a family need to set aside differences and accomodate each other, to build up everyone in order for the team to be a healthy, successfully functioning entity.
Vernon contrasted servant-leadership against the traditional albeit, increasingly archaic way of leadership style, where the leader basically puts his own needs above others and bullies his team into submission. A servant-leader on the other hand prioritizes serving others with humility and empowers his/her team members to become better at their functions in the team.
Three things to consider - What, Why and How? The "What" question helps us identify what a good servant-leader is. Servant does not equate to submissiveness and weakness. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the ultimate role model of a true servant-leader. We also need to consider WHY we serve. Vernon encouraged participants to have a personal mission statement in order to get a clear picture for why they serve. Servant leadership would ultimately bring about better job performance and satisfaction in the team. Vernon then taught participants practical steps on how to implement servant-leadership by the "A B C" method (Attract with humility, Build by showing compassion, Connect by showing empathy).
At the end of the session, Faith formation chairman Mr Ramond Chin presented a gift to Vernon as a token of appreciation. It is hoped that all participants left the hall with a renewed mind and spirit to actively practise servant-leadership in the roles that God has called each of them to, in their families, at work or in church.

SPECIAL MASS TO CELEBRATE ST MAGDALENE OF CANOSSA'S 250TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY - 4TH MAY 2023
A special mass was held on 4th May 2023 in SMC to celebrate the 250th birthday anniversary of St. Magdalene of Canossa. PARISH LENTEN RECOLLECTION - 28TH FEBRUARY, 1ST & 2ND MARCH 2023
We were indeed blessed to have Fr Fabian Dicom journey with us for three days of Parish Lenten Recollection starting with a special session for seniors at 11 am on 28th February 2023.
The purpose for the recollection was to help sustain and build the community of God's beloved. The daily themes for the recollection were :
Day 1 - Embracing our Belovedness as our Identity
Day 2 - Embracing our Servanthood as our Spirituality
Day 3 - Embracing our Mission as our Journey
We are grateful to Fr Fabian for illuminating us through scriptural teachings and the heartfelt sharing of his personal experiences. Acknowledging and recognising our identity as God's beloved son or daughter, give our lives real purpose and true worth. In the world today, many people erroneously measure their own self-worth by what they do (i.e. jobs, positions), what people say of them (privately, publicly or on social media) or what they possess (wealth or power). Jesus's actions and replies to the tempter in the desert shows us how we need to respond in the face of such falsehoods. Jesus responded decisively because he was SURE of his identity as Son of God and conviction to the scriptures. As Christians, we too need to be rooted in this knowledge of our identity and the scriptures.
Knowing who we are and who we follow enable us to embrace Jesus's spirit of servanthood. To serve as Christ did requires us to undergo a process of self-emptying. Here Fr Fabian talked about the concept of Servant Leadership as opposed to worldly leadership values. In Christianity, a leader must serve as Jesus came to serve NOT to be served. True servant-leadership possesses these six qualities : Integrity, Humility, Flexibility, Resilience, Stewardship and Empathy. This call to serve is directed to ALL of us, not just the leaders in our community, parish, town and country.
Our mission in this world is to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world, by promoting human dignity, engaging in works of social justice, caring for families, caring for the environment and embracing the poor in our society. This is the great commission given by Christ himself. Fr Fabian shared the call of Pope Francis to transform our churches to become "field hospitals" caring for those overlooked and marginalised in society as Jesus always did. The church is meant to be a refuge for all regardless of race, creed or economic status. A church that is only concerned about daily devotions, buildings, rituals and regulations is not truly fulfilling its mission. The challenge for all of us is to overcome this reluctance to move beyond superficial practices which delude us into thinking we are doing "God's work" within the comfortable confines of our church walls or homes. It is hoped that the lessons learned from these three days of recollections will help us truly embrace our identity and go forth in mission BEYOND the walls of our church, as we are called to do at the end of every mass.

Dr Albert Yong from Kelinik Kesihatan Chemor who incidentally is also a parishioner of SMC, presented a talk on palliative care in Fr Peter Pang hall on the morning of 12th Feb 2023 after the 8.00 a.m. mass. We thank Dr Albert Yong and the Padre Pio group of SMC for organizing this talk which provided attendees with greater insights and valuable information about palliative care in Malaysia and in our state.
